Artist Statement

Ben Lynam has a head for ideas and dreams, his paintings are journeys and notions. Like a modern day explorer, Ben seeks to find the undiscovered reason and rhythm that leads to a successful painting.

Not satisfied with comments like “I just like it - I don’t know why” Ben has set himself on a journey where each answer is met with more questions and clues. This fascinating artist has exhibited with Martin Galleries on numerous occasions and each time we are delighted to see the new works that come from this innovative artist’s studio.

“Landspace was borne of my fascination with light and the environment, early on my interests in art where about technique and understanding of portrait paintings. My interest changed over the years and I have become increasingly interested in philosophy, colour theory and theoretical physics. I continue to research ideas on theoretical physics and apply those ideas into my art.

Layering my paintings allows me to express my fascination with light, physics and painting techniques. My style of painting uses glazing and layering techniques to enhance the structure of the painting, style-wise my work is described as a more contemporary landscape. The subjects and designs created are more imaginative and spontaneous, which is in part due to the nature of the techniques and materials I use.

I am increasingly interested in the certainties and uncertainties of the world”.

Layering my paintings in this fashion allows me to express my fascination with light physics and painting techniques. This style of painting is an over enhanced version of glazing and use of a medium which allows me to structure the painting and style to a more contemporary art form. The subjects and designs created are more imaginative and spontaneous, which is due to the nature of the techniques and materials I use.
