Artist Statement
When I pick up my paintbrush I am free.
Free to inhabit and explore my inner emotional landscape.
Free to be in a place where I can journey through experiences and describe both ephemeral
and embedded emotions and memories through the physical process of creating my artwork.
Recent events have inspired me to revisit and explore retrospectively, significant moments of change in my
early life. Through this series I wanted to reconnect with these symbolic moments of change and explore and
embrace the energy generated by them, both positive and negative.
This series of paintings is a visual combination of embedded memories with more recent reflections.
The process of creating each work, balancing colour and composition with symbolic motifs has enabled me
to re-immerse myself in the complexity and depth of a past emotion or experience, thus acquiring
a greater knowledge and understanding of experiences from my newly realised perspective.
I allow initial ideas, compositional exploration and working sketches to flow onto the canvas,
creating a rich textural surface structure on which to finalise each piece. I layer paint and emotion,
reworking and building the canvas surface over many hours until I feel a resolution has been reached.
