On the Road Sunrise
Based on a road trip photograph taken from a moving car at sunrise , 'On the Road Sunrise' was created to capture the feeling of the freshness of a new day’s light. After driving all night, the colours of the new day were almost overwhelming. I wanted to show the movement looking out that side window, the only objects in focus were the kangaroos. I used a ‘Georges Seurat’ style pointillistic painting method, setting colours beside each other to create the effect of even more colours. I can’t count how many transparent layers went into this work, but I got the look was wanted.
The whole effect is almost like looking out a window, the painting has an inner light that commands your attention.
This work placed 2nd at the 2022 Matthew Flinders Art Prize. It was however, the best placed painting in show.
It also won 2nd prize in the Landscape section at the 2022 Nundah Art Show.
