Raindrops
Mixed Media on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.
Signed on the front.
I created ‘Rain Drops’ after I saw some children playing by the edge of Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree, they seemed to be completely unconcerned about the cold rain. The impact of seeing those kids celebrating the joy of the moment stuck with me, I just had to re-create that scene to share. Graphite is a powerful tool to render a scene in all it’s chromatic honesty, black and white narrates the message of joy so well.
I was so excited to create this work, but had to be patient, as it took so many coats of paint and sanding back to get the canvas so smooth. In all, it took 2 ½ days to prepare the canvas alone, before I could draw on it. The smoothness of the water droplets was so important as I didn’t want the weave of the canvas to distract from the lines and shades that I wanted to draw.
In my working photographs, the rain drops on the car window slid down, distorting the branches of the trees. I felt that I really needed to show that abstraction.
