pete martin
“I am driven to create, I really have no choice.
For me, painting is as essential as breathing and it completely fascinates and defines me”.
Pete Martin is a professional artist best known for his engaging aerial perspective paintings of the landscape; his powerful use of multi-layered colour and light is readily identifiable and sets his work apart from the traditional landscapes. While his works can be viewed as traditional, they are in fact contemporary landscapes, shaped and designed.
“I explore the connections between memory and the sense of self as defined in fine arts using different styles and perspectives. In a sense, my work is all about perspective; it is a balance of who we were and what we choose to remember. I approach my art as metaphor and language using two dimensional works to deliver an emotional response, these are not simple pictures; they are constructed emotional portals
My paintings use bright, happy, safe colours, to celebrate a time where we were immersed in happiness and joy but mostly wonder. I will create works until I can no longer paint, there is so much to say”.
With 22 solo exhibitions and so many group shows behind him, Pete is well known as an Artist, Gallery owner, Curator, Judge and Art Lecturer. His works have rewarded him with local and international awards, and his works hang in private and public collections. Living in Sandgate, Queensland Pete plans to live there until he can no longer paint. Professionally he was Gallery Director at both RM Galleries (Hamilton) and Martin Galleries (Nundah). He lectured at Brisbane Institute of Art and has held many workshops and curated over 160 exhibitions and published a book on his ‘Road Trip’ exhibition. Pete is currently working on various projects in his Sandgate studio and judges art shows on request.
