Quench
acrylic on canvas
122 x 92cm
The story of this work is simple, it doesn’t need compositional elements, you are high above the outback, suddenly you’re aware of that smell that comes before the rain. It rained somewhere upstream, the water starts to flow hissing and gurgling, quenching the earth once again. Small rivulets grow into bigger more powerful flows, perhaps a big flood this time. This work celebrates those first moments as the water finds the old paths.
My travels have let me experience this moment on a number of occasions, I wanted to capture something of how it feels to be there. The smells and sounds are humbling, we are so small in nature, where water is so powerful. The glowing dry land is thirsty, the water quenches that thirst, but for how long? Look into this painting for 30 seconds and you’ll see that there is power here, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
