Cunnamulla Dawn – After the Rains
I really miss the freedom of being able to travel, this peaceful painting was inspired by a trip to Cunnamulla in Western Queensland. On a morning driving along that long lonely road I was compelled to stop the car by the side of the road. There in the quiet of a misty morning I was mesmerised, I was alone with no other sound except for a distant call of some unseen bird, and the quiet swish of the cows feet as they moved around. There was no-one for miles around, I was the only one there in the pale light of a cold morning blurring heaven and earth. There and then I knew I had to make a painting that felt like being right there. So when you view this work, travel with me to that inspiring morning, feel the power of the winter sun as it burns off the mist and fog. fog and mist.
My composition is spacious, it had to be, because a story like this one needs room. The subject is obvious but there are so many moments of quiet contemplation as your eye follows the water into the distance past the dark trunked trees. The built up colours are formed using multiple transparent layers, these are most evident when viewed in person. I worked on the sky over three days introducing colours and then softly easing them back in the same way those misty mornings create their own set of colours.
As usual, I have created a story that everyone will have a different ending to.
